DEFINITION
This specialized teaching work is performed in a classroom. An employee in this class is responsible for instructing elementary school students in the areas of literacy through groups or targeted support to enable them to meet challenging State academic standards. Position supports the regular education curriculum and works collaboratively with other personnel to expand student development of appropriate skills, knowledge, and interests in reading and writing.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Instructs elementary students through literacy groups in accordance to division expectations.
Completes all requirements as a school division Title I, Part A teacher (if applicable).
Develops and delivers lesson plans appropriate to the needs and abilities of assigned students.
Meets the needs of identified students through small group instruction.
Uses a variety of instructional techniques and reading and writing materials appropriate for the age and skill level of students.
Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior and creates a safe, orderly and effective environment for learning.
Participates in conferences as requested to report student progress.
Assists with the screening and evaluation of students in reading and writing.
Collaborates with others to identify instructional needs and develop and deliver professional development.
Participates in pre-child student and child study process.
Participates in diagnostic instructional (DI) conferences.
Maintains thorough records for assigned student.
Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities.
Creates an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and activity/learning centers.
Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator that align with the Title I, Part A Application.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Has considerable knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching.
Demonstrates a working knowledge of the English language in written and verbal content.
Demonstrates an understanding and working knowledge of academic skills that are compatible with the curriculum and district strategic plan.
Demonstrates the skills necessary to teach reading and writing in a manner compatible with the curriculum and district elementary literacy plan.
Knowledgeable in the use of personal computers.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelors degree in elementary education or bachelor’s degree and completion of an alternative route to licensure.
Three (3) years of full-time teaching experience at the elementary level.
Tuberculin Skin Test certifying that the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis.
LICENSE
Eligible for, or in possession of, appropriate Virginia Teaching Certificate.

Above-average amount of walking, bending, standing, stooping, lifting.
