Definition

 

To provide effective academic instruction in a hospital setting. Work is performed under the general supervision of Principal, Hospital Education Program and Stated Operated Program Specialist.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in special education or a related field
• Virginia teacher licensure with endorsement in Special Education General Curriculum K-12
• Demonstrates considerable knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective instruction
• Demonstrates a working knowledge of the English language
• Demonstrates an understanding and working knowledge of skills that are compatible with the curriculum and district’s strategic plan
• Demonstrates a knowledge base of all exceptionalities

Nature of Position

• Works with students of various ages and abilities in a acute care setting by providing educational services that are comparable to those in public school. Services may be delivered in small group setting or at bedside.
• Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines.
• Attends mandated Virginia Department of Education, State Operated Programs’ meetings.
• Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects with the ability to communicate these objectives effectively to students, staff, and parents.
• Provides instruction while following all safety and security procedures as determined by hospital staff to include use of personal protective equipment when required.
• Provides a stable and stimulating atmosphere conducive to hospital adjustment.
• Performs duties as a team member on an interdisciplinary team in a professional and ethical manner while maintaining strict confidentiality of student information.
• Maintains a positive climate by cooperating with other staff in planning the instructional program, goals and objectives.
• Utilizes the team approach by working closely with the other teachers, hospital staff, and administration.
• Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, division policy and regulations.
• Attends and participates in faculty meetings and other professional meetings.
• Complies with and enforces the academic program’s rules, state, and federal guidelines
• Evaluates student performance on a regular basis and provides feedback to students and parents.
• Provides specially designed instruction to students with Individual Education Programs
• Modifies and adapts lesson for reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science to accommodate students with disabilities in a acute care setting. Services may be delivered in small group settings or at bedside.
• Complies with all regulations pertaining to special education processes.
• Translates the lessons into learning experiences to best utilize instructional
• Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
• Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps, appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
• Communicates with parents through conference and other means to discuss student progress and to interpret the program.
• Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
• Develops, implements, supervises, and evaluates Individual Education Programs and instructional classroom programs.
• Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator in the implementation of the personnel evaluation system.
• Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
• Performs other school duties and assignments as appointed.
