GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
This is skilled work that involves the safe and prompt transfer and delivery of all mail and packages to various locations throughout Norfolk and neighboring cities; and the pick-up and delivery of intra-system mail, including printed forms, textbooks, and packages to various locations. Delivery may involve an established route requiring delivery within a specific time frame. Work requires the safe operation of an assigned truck and knowledge of roads in Norfolk and surrounding areas. Employees in this classification may transport items to other locations outside of Norfolk when requested. An employee in this classification is responsible for verifying items received; loading items onto the truck; driving to designated locations; picking up, transferring, or delivering the assigned items; and completing any related paperwork. Daily contact is maintained with school office personnel, principals, Norfolk Public School employees, the public, and others while performing essential functions.
SUPERVISION
The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Print Shop Manager. Assignments are given orally or in writing and through route directions. Additional guidance is provided through Norfolk Public School rules, regulations, and guidelines. Work is reviewed through performance appraisals for adherence to established policies and procedures. Employees in this classification may assist in the training of new drivers. No supervision is exercised over others.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from high school and experience driving a box truck; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above-noted knowledge, skills, and abilities.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
Current Driver's License Required. CDL preferred, but not required with extensive experience noted on resume.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (May not include all duties performed by each position in the class.)
- Drives a truck to deliver and pick up assigned items at various locations within and outside of the school system such as mail, and packages.
- Sorts and organizes items to prepare for delivery; loads items onto the truck; maps out and drives shortest route between delivery locations; counts items at delivery location; unloads and picks up for delivery.
- Inspects truck routinely; ensures that routine preventive maintenance is performed on the assigned truck; washes truck.
- Prepares truck for next-day delivery; retrieves mail, packages, boxes, etc., from the other driver.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of local streets and road systems.
- Thorough knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations.
- Ability to safely operate and maneuver a large truck into narrow driveways and streets.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read, write, and organize information into standard reports.
- Ability to perform routine and minor maintenance procedures on trucks.
- Ability to safely lift heavy boxes and time-sensitive supplies.
- Ability to drive in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to operate large trucks varying in size and weight, a hand truck, telephone, dollies, and other essential tools.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others.
- Good math and reasoning skills.
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES
Work requires an ability to lift 50 lbs. manually (with back brace) and 50-100 lbs. with manual or mechanical assistance while loading and unloading of lightweight to heavy materials; ability to stand, bend, climb, stoop, and reach.
HAZARDS
Work involves exposure to road hazards and driving in adverse weather conditions. Exposure to loud noises, vibrations, exhaust fumes, and temperature extremes.
UNUSUAL DEMANDS
Work is subject to pick-up and delivery deadlines. Work requires the constant lifting or moving of lightweight to heavy materials. Incumbents carry a cell phone while performing essential functions.
