Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business and Information Technology.
  • Eligible for, or in possession of, Virginia Teachers Certification/License with appropriate endorsement(s).
  • Above-average amount of walking, bending, standing, stooping and lifting in a laboratory setting.
  • Work involves exposure to potentially hazardous situations if safety procedures are unknown or unpracticed.
  • In depth knowledge of the subject(s) to be taught.
  • Demonstrate considerable knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of computers and technology.

Nature of Position

  • This is a teaching position in a specific career and technical education area performed in a laboratory-classroom environment. An employee in this class is responsible for teaching the number of hours identified in the contract with one non-instructional period for planning, grading papers and individual conferences with parents and students. The employee organizes programs of academic and technical instruction on theory, practices, computer application processes and terminology; instructs students in subject area, safety precautions, use and maintenance of computers, other equipment and code regulations related to program area, if appropriate.  Business and Information Technology teachers must have considerable knowledge and skill in using technology within an educational environment, particularly computer application software such as word processing, database, spreadsheet and presentation software.
  • The individual must be proficient in the required concepts and computer skills in one or more of the following skill-based subjects: Keyboarding Applications; Accounting; Word Processing; Design, Multimedia and Web Technologies; Office Administration; or Computer Applications.
  • The individual must be proficient in the required concepts and knowledge in one or more of the following theory-based subjects: Business Law and Business Management.
  • The individual must utilize the Virginia Department of Education, Office of Career and Technical Education industry-validated competency lists, Norfolk Public Schools’ curriculum guides and courses of instruction approved by appropriate authorities.
  • Ability to understand and demonstrate proficiency in grammar, usage and mechanics and their integration in writing.
  • Teaching, evaluating student progress and assessing student performance.
  • Possession of knowledge, skills and principles of manual and automated accounting.
  • Possession of knowledge and skills in the foundations of business law, basic economic principles, contemporary business principles and practices, business management, money management, finance, banking, business organization, insurance and communications.
  • Ability to identify, select, evaluate, use, install, upgrade, customize, diagnose and solve problems with various types of operating systems, environments and utilities.
  • Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Develops lesson plans and organizes daily classes so that modeling, demonstration, instruction, guided and independent practice can be completed within the allotted time.
  • Provides individual, small group or cooperative learning group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student with varying intellectual abilities and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
  • Demonstrates skills such as keyboarding techniques, computer operations, computer application software focusing on word processing, database, spreadsheet and presentation activities; as well as digital input technologies.
  • Prepares appropriate instructional aids, multimedia presentations and displays materials to enhance and improve learning.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior required for an orderly, safe and productive classroom-laboratory environment where several kinds of activities may be taking place simultaneously.
  • Selects and evaluates textbooks, instructional resource materials, supplies and equipment required for inventory records.
  • Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property and makes minor repairs to equipment as needed.
  • Evaluates each student’s progress in the attainment of knowledge and improvement in the performance of skills in the courses being taught by preparing progress reports and employment references.
  • Provides appropriate safety instructions in the use, care and safe operation of computers, office machines and other multimedia equipment.
  • The Business and Information Technology teacher is under the supervision of the building principal (or his designee), other building administrators as well as the district senior coordinator.
