Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in music education (vocal or instrumentation).
  • Tuberculin skin test certifying that the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis.
  • Eligible for, or in possession of, Virginia Teacher’s Certificate/Licensure with appropriate endorsement(s).
  • In depth knowledge of the subject(s) to be taught.
  • Demonstrate considerable knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching.
  • Ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports and effectively interact with pupils, other teachers, administrators, and classified employees.
  • Demonstrate expertise in the applied major and minor.

Nature of Position

  • Teaches knowledge and skills in music appreciation, fundamentals, and explorations in music and in general and beginning choral music (chorus) or instrumental music (strings) to pupils (elementary).
  • Teaches knowledge and skills in music appreciation, theory, explorations in music, and instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) or choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble) to pupils (Secondary).
  • Utilizes courses of instruction approved by appropriate authorities.
  • Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily class time so that preparation, instruction, and rehearsal can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  • Provides individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Uses repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
  • Controls the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and initiates repairs to instruments as required with the designated vendor.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior for an orderly, productive learning environment during class, group practice, and musical performance.
  • Evaluates each pupil’s progress in growth and performance, assessing each pupil’s individual contribution to the group.
  • Plans, rehearses, and directs pupils in musical programs for the school and community as appropriate.
  • Selects and requisitions music books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service educational activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities related to music.
  • Identifies pupils’ needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Communicates with parents and/or school personnel on pupil progress.
  • Cooperates with the school administration in providing optimum musical instruction and opportunities.
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom music activities during and outside the assigned work day.
  • Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
  • Work is performed in a classroom, concert halls, auditoriums, and outdoors, involving exposure to the normal risks associated with each and requires no unusual demands.
  • Work involves exposure to higher than normal decibel levels because of use of instruments and singular and multiple voices.
  • Above-average amount of walking, marching, bending, standing, stooping, and lifting in a classroom and concert environment and laboratories.
